Forty new deaths have been reported in connection with Covid infections.
For weeks, the number of new infections has been at unprecedented levels. Several days in a row, more than 50,000, even 60,000 new cases were registered within one day.
This upward dynamic, driven by the Omikron variant BA.2, as well as still the older variant BA.1 and at the same time wide openings, now seems to have slowed down. Only yesterday, forecaster and mathematician Niki Popper said that the peak of the current wave has probably been reached or already passed. Wastewater analyses also support this conclusion.
From Thursday to Friday, 37,910 new infections were registered in Austria. For comparison: last Friday, the value was 51,112. The current new infections are below the average of the past seven days of 39,713. Currently, 439,936 people in Austria are actively infected with the coronavirus.
The seven-day incidence is 3,123.12. In the past 24 hours, 316,998 new PCR tests were performed. This gives a positive rate of 11.96 percent.
There are also 40 new deaths associated with Covid-19 infection to report. So far, the Coronavirus has claimed 15,619 lives in Austria.
Since the pandemic’s beginning, 3.6 million infections have been detected in Austria so far. Since the outbreak of the epidemic, 3.2 million people have recovered.
Currently, 3,178 people are being treated in hospitals. In intensive care units, 240 people are currently being treated.
